Perception is everything in our leadership.
PERCEPTION, a way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting something; a mental impression.
King David, a man after God's own heart (1 Sam. 13:14, Acts 13:22), was a great leader, but he wasn't perfect—an affair and murder were part of his story. How can a man with that kind of history be called a man after God's own heart? Because King David's perception started with a solid foundation.
In Psalm 11, we see the man after God's own heart. Starting in verse 1, he reveals his solid foundation: "In the Lord I take refuge." In verse 3, he writes, "When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?" This rhetorical question reveals his dilemma. In verses 4-5, David reveals his solid foundation again: "The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord is on his heavenly throne. He observes everyone on earth; his eyes examine them. The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion." In verse 6, David warns what happens to those who do not stand on this foundation: "On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur, a scorching wind will be their lot." In verse 7, he tells of God's character and presence to those who rest in him as their solid foundation: "For the Lord is righteous, he loves justice; the upright will see his face."
King David's message in Psalm 11 reminds us that a Christ-centered leader's perception is built on a solid foundation. We live in a world where circumstances tend to dictate our perception. We are limited in understanding what God is doing in this world. The Lord is working, always aware of what's going on; his plans are perfect. Christ-centered leaders are the ones that by faith find direction to live daily, in every detail, by the NAME above all names. And that is how a solid foundation is built.
